For many years Canning Downs enjoyed a successful reputation as breeders or owners of winners of “Cups” and other staying races including the Tancred, Sydney Cup, Caulfield Cup, Brisbane Cup, Doomben Cup, Mooney Valley Cup, AJC Summer Cup, The Metropolitan, AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, AJC Derby, QTC Derby and QTC Oaks.

As Australia’s racing industry has developed to be the envy of many countries, this has also increased the demand by participants to race horses which mature more quickly in order to compete in 2yo and 3yo sprint and middle distance races. In order to produce a well bred, sound horse to meet these requirements, we carefully consider the purchase and retention of broodmares and the selection of suitable stallions. Through selective mating, optimum gestation and good husbandry during their critical early stages of development we aim to provide an optimum framework to continue to breed racehorses able to compete at the highest level.

Canning Downs has sought to further diversify its breeding interests by having an interest in breeding stock in the UK. From this investment, we jointly bred and raced Aclaim (Acclamation ex Aris), winner of the 2017 G1 1400m Prix de la Forêt in France. Aclaim now stands at the English National Stud.

The following Group 1 races have been won by horses either bred by Canning Downs and/or raced by the Barnes family.
